With reference to the letter from this department

of the 11th instant and previous correspondence, relative to

the remuneration to be granted to the Chief Justice of

Hongkong and the Judge at Shanghai, when acting as a member

;

of the Appeal Court at Shanghai and Hongkong respectively,

I am directed by Secretary Sir Austen Chamberlain to enclose,

for the information of the Secretary of State for the

Colonies, a copy of a despatch which has been addressed to

His Honour Judge Grain on the subject.

2. In accordance with the arrangement now agreed upon,

the remuneration payable to the Chief Justice of Hongkong

for his services as Appeal Judge at Shanghai will be issued

by the Judge at Shanghai and the contribution of ten thousand

dollars a year made by the Government of Hongkong towards

the maintenance of the Registry of Companies at Shanghai

should, in future, be remitted to His Majesty's Consul-General

at Shanghai in full. I am, therefore, to request that the necessary adjustment may be made for the current year with

effect from the 16th June.
